My Experience Volunteering with Seeds for a Future in Guatemala
After six months of traveling through Europe and Central America, I arrived in Antigua, Guatemala, where I spent two months volunteering and learning Spanish. This turned out to be one of the highlights of my travels.
From the moment I arrived, Guatemala captivated me with its warm and friendly people, vibrant traditional textiles, and the aroma of freshly roasted coffee. One of my favorite aspects was the ubiquitous "Buenos Dias" greeting from everyone on the street, a stark contrast to the rushed atmosphere of my home in Melbourne, Australia.
Volunteering with Seeds for a Future
I volunteered with Seeds for a Future because of their commitment to sustainable agriculture and community development. My tasks included report editing, document translation, and grant research, all contributing meaningfully to the organization's efforts.
One of my most memorable times was the opportunity to attend a ‘Dia del Campo’ (Field Day) where I had the opportunity to meet the dedicated extensionist team. They showcased the Mandela Garden and various agricultural techniques. The ‘Dia del Campo’ was a vibrant affair, with a large turnout of locals gathering to learn about sustainable farming techniques, including growing diverse vegetables, composting and cultivating mushrooms, as well as a delicious lunch. The enthusiasm of the extensionist team was contagious, their passion for community empowerment evident in every interaction. It was inspiring to witness firsthand the impact of their work and to be part of such a dedicated team. My only regret is that I didn’t get to spend more time with them.
Living with a Local Family
One of the most enriching aspects of my time was living with a local family. From the moment I arrived, They welcomed me warmly, offering deep insights into Guatemalan culture through shared meals and conversations in Spanish. Insights that are not possible when staying in a hotel/hostel. learning about their way of life offered insights not possible from staying in a hotel/hostel. They provided a home away from home, and I now have a Guatemalan family I look forward to visiting again.
Semana Santa Celebrations
My volunteering experience coincided with Semana Santa, the Holy Week leading up to Easter. The celebrations in Antigua are among the most renowned in the world. The city came alive with elaborate processions, and ‘Alfombras’ or carpets made of coloured sawdust, flowers, vegetables and pine needles. Participating in these festivities with my host family allowed me to witness a blend of indigenous traditions and Catholic rituals, enriching my experience further.
Spanish Language Studies
Studying Spanish daily was another highlight. The one-on-one language classes improved my communication skills and connected me more deeply to the local community. Practicing with locals led to new friendships and cultural exchanges that enhanced my volunteer experience.
Reflections and Takeaways
My time in Antigua was more than just volunteering; it was a profound cultural immersion. The memories and connections I made will stay with me forever, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to and learn from such a vibrant community.
